Janus, Ironman athletes raise more than $2.5 million for non-profits in 2003 through the Janus Charity Challenge
DENVER, Colo.-In an unique partnership between Janus Capital Group, Ironman North America, World Triathlon Corporation and Ironman athletes, more than $2.5 million dollars was raised for nonprofit groups through the 2003 Janus Charity Challenge. This surpasses the 2002 total by more than $750,000.
Nearly 200 athletes competing in the five full-distance Ironman events in 2003 participated in the Janus Charity Challenge. “What this group of dedicated athletes accomplished is absolutely amazing,” said Casey Cortese, Sponsorship Marketing Manager for Janus. “I hope the triathletes who have participated in the past will urge their peers to join them next year so they can help even more nonprofits. I can only imagine what we would achieve with even five or ten percent of the field in each race taking part.”
As presenting sponsor of Ironman North America events in the United States, the Denver-based investment management firm created the Janus Charity Challenge to encourage athletes to use Ironman North America events as a way to raise money for their favorite non-profit organizations.
“The Janus Charity Challenge provides a great opportunity for our athletes to raise funds for the charity or nonprofit group of their choice,” said Graham Fraser, President of Ironman North America. “Janus has been a great partner with Ironman North America and the Janus Charity Challenge has been a great asset to our events. Our goal is to see it continue to grow for years to come.”
In only three years, the Janus Charity Challenge has raised more than $4.5 million for hundreds of nonprofit groups throughout the country.
All athletes who competed in Ironman North America full-distance U.S. events in 2003 were eligible to participate in the program. For the top three individual fundraisers at each race, Janus made a donation to their designated charity in the following amounts: First place, $10,000; second place, $5,000; and third place, $3,000. The beneficiary of the top team fundraisers (any group of three or more) received a contribution of $8,500.
And for the next top 25 fundraisers, Janus contributed $750 to the athletes chosen nonprofit group. In addition, the top fundraiser at each race had the entry fee waived for the Ironman North America race of his or her choice within the next 12 months.
