Janus, Ironman athletes raise more than $600,000 for charity at HSBC Ironman USA Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-HSBC Ironman USA athletes competing in the Janus Charity Challenge, raising nearly $620,000 at the fifth annual HSBC Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon held on Sunday, July 27, 2003. The total represents the record amount raised at an Ironman event for the Janus Charity Challenge.

As presenting sponsor of Ironman North America events in the United States, Janus plays host to the Janus Charity Challenge program, a program that is designed to encourage athletes to use the 2003 Ironman North America events as a platform to raise money for their favorite nonprofit organization.

Fifty-five athletes took part in the Janus Charity Challenge at the 2003 HSBC Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon; 40 individuals and one team of 15.

“The commitment and dedication of the Janus Charity Challenge athletes continues to amaze us all, said Casey Cortese, Sponsorship Marketing Manager at Janus. “To see the 55 athletes who participated in the program in Lake Placid accomplish so much is a tribute to the true spirit of Ironman. I hope more athletes will choose to follow their lead and support the program in some way, either by raising funds themselves, or by supporting the fundraising efforts of their fellow athletes. Janus couldn't be more proud of this program and our Ironman partnership.”

Through two Ironman events, (Ironman USA Coeur d’Alene and HSBC Ironman USA Lake Placid) Ironman athletes and Janus have raised more than $970,000* for non-profit organizations.

“This program represents all that is right with a sponsor partnership,” said Ironman North America President Graham Fraser. “Janus and our athletes continue to raise impressive totals at each of our event and the continued growth of the program has been great.”

All athletes competing in any Ironman North America full-distance event in 2003 can participate in the program and raise money for the nonprofit organization of their choice.

For the top three individual fundraisers at each race, Janus will make an additional donation to their designated charity in the following amounts: First place, $10,000; second place, $5,000; and third place, $3,000. The beneficiary of the top team fundraisers (any group of three or more) will receive a contribution of $8,500.

In addition, the first-place fundraiser’s entry fee will be waived for the Ironman North America race of his or her choice within the next 12 months.

In addition to its donations to the top three fundraisers’ charities, Janus will contribute $750 to the chosen nonprofit group designated by the next 25 athletes who raise the most money in the Janus Charity Challenge at an Ironman North America U.S. event.
